Rive Gauche Rive Droite

Posted in Central, English menu, French, Hong Kong, Hong Kong Island, LKF, Set lunch deals on February 20, 2008 by kevlars

This joint is tucked away on the 2nd floor of Onfem Tower on Wyndham Street, right across from the Fringe Club. If you’ve forgotten to make reservations and got delayed at work and are heading out to eat in the middle of the Central lunch hour insanity, this is a good option.

Set lunch is HK$128 for 2 courses, HK$148 for 3 courses, not including taxes. An Angus steak will carry a surcharge of HK$30 but is pretty worthwhile. Service is friendly and prompt, the old Indian proprietor will go out of his way to please, so don’t be afraid to ask for things off the menu.

The food is consistently good, if not particularly spectacular. Tables are decently spaced.

The only downside is that for lunch, it’s pretty pricey considering what’s being offered just a little higher up over at Wagyu, Frog Face Fish and Zest.

O Sip Hah

Tiny place, big on decor. See:

Can’t in all honesty say the food was spectacular. But its a set lunch for HK$68 in Central – what a steal. Two menus – pick between Asian mains (i.e. noodles) HK$58 up, and Western mains (i.e. meat) HK$88 up. Three courses for the former, four for the latter, no dessert but a drink (coffee/lemongrass tea/juice) is provided.

My dishes were rather hit and miss: excellent Thai fish cake starter, but the raw beef noodles (pho) were disappointing.

If you’re feeling baroque and OTT, hit O Sip Hah. The candlesticks are really something else.

Zest Restaurant

Now this, this is a real gem. Set lunch: HK$108, and the food was brilliant throughout. So maybe the decor isn’t particularly imaginative and the service somewhat harried, but the waitresses were very pleasant and we were too busy stuffing our faces to care about the walls anyway. I had pasta – perfectly al dente – and my companion ordered the pork, which came with an inch and a half layer of grilled fat. This doesn’t appeal to everyone (not me) but it certainly put him over the moon.

This place definitely requires a prior reservation. Just walk down the road from the extremely popular Frog Face Fish towards SoHo and you can’t miss it.

Serves normal water, though a switch to cappucino from coffee means an extra HK$10.

Restaurant Le Fauchon

The blackboard outside Le Fauchon says “lunch from HK$98”. Actually, HK$98 means pasta. If you’d like meat for a main, lamb is HK$108, salmon HK$118, and steak HK$128.
But – it’s a pretty good deal. Salad and soup, aforesaid mains, plus coffee and dessert. That’s plenty. My steak was an excellent cut, and properly medium rare, though I have to admit that the sauce wasn’t spectacular. Big white plush seats, attentive English-speaking waiters, piping hot bread, plenty o’ butter, and they don’t charge for water. I’d go back.

Go early – it was packed by 1pm.
